Deserted Beaches?

Many of the beaches in South Maui were closed to swimmers yesterday and today because of a shark attack on a vacationing snorkeler yesterday. The victim survived to tell the tale, and I watched her on television tonight in a wheelchair with bandaged foot giving her version of the story. I also blogged about this today on another blog, Who's Yo Mama? if you'd like to read more details.

What rather amused me was is what she related on television--and I paraphrase--that when she came stumbling out of the water yelling, 'Shark, shark!', people just kinda gave her a blank look, and the thought crossed her mind that they might be thinking she was making up a shark story or that they were perceiving her as a crazy woman. Once they saw her blood, then they were convinced!

Blood seems to be the one thing that most people recognize. Words are meaningless as people all walk around these days with a hand permanently stuck on one or both ears. Fortunately, they still don't have anything stuck on the eyes. Nice photo and compelling narative.

See the latest windpower technology working here in Brookville.

What a story!
Very similar to Australian beaches, both for the risk of shark attacks and the beautiful beautiful setting!

Are shark attacks part of thefolklore and "mythology" of Hawaii as they are here?

Tourists are often scared of spiders, snakes, crocs and sharks! [With reasonably good reason!]

"Shark, shark!" would have been enough to convince me! Such a beautiful place.

That's some fabulous photograph! No people makes for beautiful beaches but I'm sorry to hear of the shark attack. Funny story tho - like cry wolf - until they saw the blood.

You keep safe!

Very nice photo. It looks like a secluded beach on a paradise island, which Hawaii is.

I would expect a reaction like that in a big city - but on a beach in Maui? Are we really so desensitized?
Glad the lady is OK - you take care now, you hear?!
