Whale Footprint

Whales make a footprint which is visible on the surface of the water-- a circular area where the surface of the water is smoother than the surrounding water. The whale's tail creates a vortex as it moves through the water just below the surface.

A Whale Of A Day

Our whale-watching boat got "mugged" today by a curious whale. Mugging is the term used when a whale comes close to your boat to check ya out. Do you see what I see?

Re-visiting the Kalama Park Whale in Photos

I was stuck in a traffic jam today while roadwork was being done on South Kihei Road, and so while I waited I photographed the famous Kalama Park Whale again. I posted it once before on November 15, 2006, and you can see the old photo here.

In those old blogging days, I had yet to learn how to make my photos bigger, but thanks to Ming of New York City Daily Photo who taught me how to enlarge my photos, now I like my photos much better!

And you...don't you like them better too?

Who Is Watching Whom?

It's the whale-watching season again as the Humpback Whales have migrated down to the warm waters of Maui from their Arctic home. They come here to winter, mate, and calve. Of course, everyone loves to go out on the water to see them up close and personal. Sometimes the whales come in very close to the boats, and sometimes they keep their distance. I've experienced many years of interacting with these amazing beings, and I still get a rush out of watching them, and even more so out of watching the people watching the whales.
