Pikake in Bloom



Our pikake bushes are in full bloom! We have a lot of them, and these tiny white flowers give off the most divine smell which permeates our entire home. Pikake leis are prized in Hawaii, and they cost a pretty penny.

Heavenly Wind Chimes



These windchimes cost around $300 or so as they are tuned perfectly and of very high quality. The sound they make when the tradewinds blow is heavenly and very soothing.

Tacky Tourists For Halloween Costume?



Has the image of a tacky Hawaiian tourist become so widespred that the image is marketed as a Halloween costume? Evidently so, because this photo is of a "Tacky Tourists" Halloween costume kit sold here at Long's Drugstore on Maui.

Humpback Whales Return to Maui

The Humpback Whales return to the Hawaiian waters every year about this time to mate, frolic and calve. This is a GIANT wood sculpture/carving/of a humpback whale.

Line After Earthquake

The ABC convenience store was the ONLY store open EARLY in South Maui after the 6.6 earthquake happened here yesterday. People lined up for ice for their perishables, food and such. On Oahu (another island), the lines were much longer. Maui suffered very little damage from this early morning shaker.

Feeding The Hungry Dancing Dragon

The arm of this man is going into the mouth of the dancing dragon at the beginning of the Chinese New Year Year Festival with a red envelope which has money within it. This act of feeding the dancing dragon ensures good fortune for the coming year. Inside the costume is a man (one of four) who dance this ritual dance for an auspicious New Year every year at the beginning of Chinese New Year.

Hawaiian version of The Japanese Lucky Cat



You will see the Japanese Lucky Cat (Maneki Neko) in these Islands because of the strong Japanese influence here. The cats are displayed to bring luck, success and blessings depending upon which paw is raised. This is the Hawaiian version with a lei!

Cruise Ship in Harbor

This photo was taken on the first day the Noreweigan Pride of America arrived on Maui. The Norweigan Cruise Lines have many ships plying the waters between the various Hawaiian Islands. When they arrive on Maui, they dock at the Kahului Harbor.

Tiki Carvings

Tiki statues carved from wood are seen throughout the islands...everywhere from road side stands, homes, hotels and restaurants. They come in all sizes and types of wood. They represent the old gods of Hawaii, and some of the old ones are considered collectibles and sell for lots of money.

Last Gift

This oriental pillow cover was the last gift given to us by the late Lama Tenzin of Maui, Hawaii before his passing. We treasure it and hold fond memories of this amazing lama who was once the head of the Dharma Center here on Maui, Hawaii. Our publishing company produced a film of his return to Tibet to visit his family after a 40 year absence. This film is titled, "Journey Inside Tibet" and played on PBS for many years.
